Given the content of the book was didactic in nature we wanted to approach the design from the perspective of a textbook-like artifact. The way it was written made note of all sorts of details that would require a complex system for organization.
Out of hundreds of images of the process and documentation of the final project that the book featured we curated the core group of images that best represented the text and helped to tell the story.
The book as a whole was meant to be a system so Andrew could continue to write about and document his public projects. This book was not just a container for one project's story but ultimately would need to be a container for any project's story. The cover was designed to be a canvas that could magnify a singular image to represent the work contained in the book.
We worked with Andrew to designed the content structure of the book, workshopping a system that could ultimately be filled with content from any of his future projects. Ultimately the book was broken into two sections denoted by their paper stock and printing technique. The first section, printed in black and white on a thinner stock, was the information section which contained all of the writing and documentation. The second section, printed in full color on heavy gloss stock, was all of the images from the first section in sequence as large as they could be printed. The two sections serve as a reference for each other, giving the viewer the option to enter the book from a visual or textual perspective.
The interior of the book was also designed to make the most of the space on the page. We utilized multiple text orientations, along with typographic styles to give cues to the reader so they could more easily distinguish supplementary information from the primary storytelling.
